Underground | Dancenorth Print
Explore the strange and the familiar happenings of an underground station when Brisbane Powerhouse and Mobile States bring Dancenorth’s quirky tales of the daily commute to life, in Underground, at the Powerhouse Theatre 8 – 11 October, 2008.

Set in a subway during rush hour, Underground is a place of crowded isolation, familiar yet strange.  It’s a world where commuters slip between mundane reality and a vivid dream world – disconnected from each other, yet capable of great compassion and tenderness.

Underground asks the audience to question what is it that makes people identify with other individuals or not identify with them.  How can we detach ourselves from what is going on around us, especially in such a crowded place?

Dancenorth’s Artistic Director Gavin Webber teams gutsy choreography with Luke Smiles’ sexy soundtrack  featuring Nick Cave, Nine Inch Nails and Messerchups.  Webber’s team of young and highly skilled dancers suck you into a surreal world that shifts from darkly moody to hilariously funny to terrifyingly athletic, with an intense repertoire of moves that would rival those of elite athletes.

Webber explains the rollercoaster experience of the piece.  “It's really highly volatile and energetic,” he says.  “But it's all based on mistreatment of individuals, so they're treading all over each other basically.  I like to focus on the way people mistreat each other sometimes in big cities."

Underground is dance theatre at its explosive best, turning the everyday mundane into fantasy, with choreography that seems the challenge the very laws of gravity.  The piece is in the distinct style Webber is known for which draws on his experience of working with Meryl Tankard (ADT) and Wim Vandekeybus.  Audiences can expect a dynamic piece of similar quality to extraordinary works lawn and Helpmann Award nominated roadkill, seen more recently at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Underground is toured by Performing Lines for Mobile States: Touring Contemporary Performance Australia.  Following their Brisbane Powerhouse performance, Underground will travel to Lismore, 14-15 October; Bathurst, 18 October; Sydney, 22 -1 November: Hobart, 5 – 8 November; Melbourne, 12 – 16 November; and Perth, 19 – 29 November.
“Fast, dangerous, quirky but with a core of almost angry sadness.” - Courier Mail
