The Grand Inquisitor Print
‘This is an extraordinary performance not to be missed.’ The Sunday Times (UK)

Brisbane Festival 2008 is proud to present the Australian premiere of THE GRAND INQUISITOR, a gripping monologue directed by the legendary theatrical guru Peter Brook. With its season commencing on Saturday July 19th, THE GRAND INQUISITOR explores religious belief, human freedom, compassion and weakness.

Adapted by Marie-Hélène Estienne from The Brothers Karamazov‚ by Fiodor Dostoyevsky, THE GRAND INQUISITOR finds Jesus Christ returning to earth fifteen centuries after his departure in the form of a fable. We find him working miracles again but this time in Seville during the Spanish Inquisition. He is arrested and brought before the Cardinal Grand Inquisitor. The result is a mesmerising production that speaks volumes about contemporary world politics and the perennial dichotomy of church and state.

No name in contemporary theatre rings louder than Peter Brook. Regarded as one of the most innovative theatre directors on the planet, he was the wunderkind of the late 20th century and his productions continue to create a great deal of anticipation and excitement.

Long time collaborator Bruce Myers both narrates and plays the title role, with an oratorical skill that is masterful.

Peter Brook seizes on the theatricality of the narrative to stage a thought provoking and chilling production that cuts to the core of contemporary anxieties. With a season exclusive to Brisbane Festival 2008, THE GRAND INQUISITOR is not to be missed.

“Exquisite, glowing. From first to last, this was a spellbinding evening.” The Independent
