This production is new to Queensland. Created by designer Leon Krasenstein and directed by John Milson, this bold interpretation of Rossini’s masterpiece boasts a kaleidoscopic world inspired by the art deco designs of famed Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi.
The setting is a 1930s health spa for the indulgent rich and famous of Seville. Dr Bartolo, who runs the spa, has his sights set on marrying his pretty young ward Rosina. At the same time, Rosina has attracted the attention of the dashing Count Almaviva who is prepared to go to great lengths to win her heart. Enter Figaro, the resident barber to the health spa and a notorious match-maker. Seeing an opportunity to get the upper hand on Bartolo, the Count elicits the assistance of Figaro to help him woo Rosina. From the glorious overture to the spirited finale, Rossini’s romantic comedy is full of lively melodies and sparkling ensembles, amongst which is Figaro’s celebrated Largo al factotum.
Argentinean-born baritone José Carbó sings the role of the dapper stylist Figaro. He leads a stellar cast featuring Russian soprano Elvira Fatykhova (last seen in Opera Queensland’s much fêted 2006 production of Lucia di Lammermoor) as the ravishing Rosina, Adrian Dwyer as the smitten Count Almaviva and John Bolton Wood as the devious Dr Bartolo.
