Hoy Polloy presents, in partnership with the Melbourne Writers’ Theatre, the world premiere of Christine Croyden’s The Cat’s Paw directed by Wayne Pearn at the Carlton Courthouse Theatre from 17 September – 3 October 2009.
The Cat’s Paw is a response to raunch culture and one of its biggest benefactors – the ever expanding, billion-dollar sex industry.
Melbourne playwright, Christine Croyden has set The Cat’s Paw in the world of prostitution because it is where the greatest exploitation of desperate young people occurs.
Croyden developed The Cat’s Paw after working as a volunteer at the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda and for Project Respect, where she ran a creative writing class for women wanting to exit the sex industry.
However, the catalyst for The Cat’s Paw came much earlier when as a young nurse on night duty in the Emergency Department of the Alfred Hospital she met many working girls.
Croyden is a graduate of the University of Melbourne with post-graduate study in the areas of cultural studies and creative writing.
Her works include The Snail Killer, Provocation, Shady Ladies, ivf Chook, various short plays and monologues, and two novels for young adults – The Painted Portal and The Memory Thief.
The impact of raunch culture combined with women’s more comfortable and assertive attitude towards sex has diminished the taboo, and increased interest in the sex industry – as a result, more young women than ever before are entering the industry.
The Cat’s Paw challenges stereotypes and reveals the paradoxes in the lives of the young women who work the street, and ultimately asks what it means to be human in a world such as the sex industry.
Hoy Polloy artistic director, Wayne Pearn said, “Presenting The Cat’s Paw continues the company’s committment to producing quality new Australian works – previous productions include Killing Jeremy by Bridgette Burton and The Real Thring by Barry Dickins.”
Pearn is directing The Cat’s Paw and explained, “Hoy Polloy is excited to be presenting this new Australian work… together with Christine, we have been working on and continuing to refine the script to where it is now – ready for a full scale production.”
“What attracted me to the play was the humanity, humour and power of the piece and the sense of ‘other worldliness’,” Pearn concluded.
The cast of the world premiere of The Cat’s Paw features Kylie Bell (Betty Roland’s Feet Of Clay), Cecilia Condon (Genesis), Zoe Ellerton-Ashley (The Chapel Perilous), Stephanie Lillis (Our Country’s Good), Emma Lyhne (Wanderlands) and Daniel Rice (Blowing Whistles).
