The Raga Dolls Salon Orchestra again delighted its increasing numbers of fans with a live broadcast at the ABC’s Iwaki Auditorium on Thursday October 2nd.
Timed to coincide with the release of their most recent CD, Late Harvest: Imagined Songs of a Forgotten Australia, the program comprised eight of the album’s ten tracks, and four of its popular hits. Highlights included Kelly’s Lament, Waltz no 4, and Sydney Baynes' always elegant Destiny Waltz.
Its musical director, David Osborne, has great verve and energy, as well as composition, orchestrating and conducting skills of a high order, and his ability and enthusiasm stimulate and inspire both players and audience. Osborne continues to explore some of the long-buried and often dismissed musical riches of Australia’s past, and his findings are always of genuine interest. The Lament, for instance, is written to celebrate the work of Frederick Septimus Kelly (1881-1916), a composer who deserves revival.
Don’t wait too long before you hear this elegant, yet warm and melodious music, either live or on the group’s three CDs.
