 According to their website, Puppetry of the Penis
was conceived by Simon Morley in 1996 as the title of a highbrow art
calendar, showcasing twelve of his favourite penis installations (known
as "Dick Tricks" to the uninformed layperson). He soon joined forces
with David Friend, who began his own Dick Trick career in the bath and
developed his skills further when he discovered beer in college.
The
current show at the Athenaeum starts with a multi-media presentation of
the success of the show over the last ‘dickade’, showing video footage
of Simon and David on tour, performing and the audience reaction.
Watching this footage, the crowd is in fits of laughter before Simon
and David even walk on the stage and when they finally do, they get
straight to the point.
Cloaks
off, the boys bare all and video their bits at close range, projecting
them on to a huge screen. They’ve got our attention.
They
then demonstrate what they can do with their equipment - stretch them,
bend them, put them through their legs, twist them, turn them and make
them look like Yoda, a snail, wind sail, hamburger, hot dog or
frightened turtle. There is nothing magic or mysterious about the show.
The guys simply push and pull their penises to vaguely resemble a
variety of shapes, objects, characters and animals and project
close-ups of them on to a screen until people laugh. And they did. The
audience loved every inch and second. It’s not everyone’s taste I am
sure, but with several shows being performed simultaneously around the
world, there is obviously a huge market for Simon and David’s special
brand of entertainment.
The
highlight of the night was when a volunteer was brought on stage to
‘give the boys a hand’. They chose a ‘nanna’ whose shocked expression
and reaction added to the humour, when she assisted them with a trick -
Simon stood on his hands, while nanna held his legs, causing her face
to be far too close to his genitalia - all captured gloriously on
camera in extreme close up.
The Puppetry of the Penis is about to embark on yet another regional tour of Australia and if dicks and their manipulation is your thing, don’t miss it!
