What a pleasure to read a comprehensive review. It criticizes where due but praises the extraordinary quality of Matthews, Cutler and Carbo. I saw the matinee on the Saturday (second performance) and it was superb. Certainly it gathered strength as it went on - I thought the duet between Lucia and Enrico was the turning point. I was amused by the odd theology of Raimondo and thought it was a pity Lucia hadn't seen Catherine Tate so that she could have told Enrico "I ain't bovvered"! I've seen this production several times since 1980 and I agree that it was easily the best line up of principals - even without Sutherland. I thought it interesting too that Matthews went right back to Sutherland's first recording of Regnava di solenzio (without the subsquent cadenza I find irritating and unnecessary) with Nello Santi conducting. Anyway. all told it was great to see this performance.
