Interesting comments. In the translation just prior to the Tamino/Speaker scene, Tamino sings " Why am I here, where should I go, what's in this place that I should know"? All this is reflected in Tamino's movement and body language. He then becomes more sure of himself as the opera unfolds. Tamino is a difficult character to interpret and his "silent scene" with Pamina as she sings "Ach, Ich Fuhls" can be difficult. On the whole Tamino stands and delivers in his noble way.Remember this is not Nemorino or the Duke. A lot of his stuff is subtle and internalised. Also, this is opera- extremely difficult to sing. This ain't Les Mis. I was lucky to study this with many great singers and interpreters and have my ideas on it. Having discussed this with the great Nicolai Gedda I know it's difficulties. The production is another thing. I would be happy to discuss this in person if it gives people a deeper understanding of this art form and composer. Or carry on enjoying your Bocelli cd's.
