Meet the wonderful Kitty Taube. Our set designer.

I asked Kitty some questions about her role on Brontë. Here's what she had to say:

What's your background?

Visual Arts with First Class Honours at QUT (Queensland University of Technology).

I've designed a number of local independent theatre productions at Metro Arts, including Hollow Crossing and Motortown this year.

Tell us about your design concept.

The script is a new work by Polly Teale that begins in modern times.  We are then taken back to the early 19th century and start navigating the intimate and creative lives of the Brontë  sisters.  

The design reflects aspects of the past and present at once.  It evokes ideas of transformation, the everyday and the imaginative.  It is intended to be a shifting / moving installation of sorts, where the actors bring to life objects and characters of epic history, presented at first, as they would be in a museum. 

Tell us about working in independent theatre.

There are always difficulties in independent theatre, but the benefits out way them in the end.  It is wonderful when you can work collaboratively with a team of people who are interested in making something great together. Independent theatre provides a place for local talent to converge and has the inherent potential for a more soulful, unbounded expression of creativity than in the commercial realms.

What else are you up to at the moment? 

I recently completed a design secondment at QTC (Queensland Theatre Company)for The August Moon.  I'm currently assisting Josh McIntosh on The Wishing Well at La Boite.  As well as that, I manage a commercial gallery full-time.
